Old wives’ tales that can help predict the gender of your baby

If you’re pregnant, it’s such a special experience to find out the sex of the baby (like by throwing a reveal party — check out ours for inspo)! I feel like recently I’ve spoken to a lot of friends who are opting to leave it a surprise instead. Either way, testing out some of the old wives’ tales that can help predict the sex is a lot of fun!

Here are some of the ones I used before my gender reveal, and whether they turned out to be true for me.

1. Sweet vs. salty cravings – FALSE

If you’re craving salty foods, that’s believed to mean you’re carrying a boy. I LOVED Cup Noodle during my first trimester, and what was weird is it didn’t taste salty at all. But I know that soup would usually taste too salty for me. That’s probably why I hadn’t eaten it since college. I also wanted to eat all the potato chips I could find. That all led me to believe I was having a boy, but I’m actually having a girl.

2. Bad morning sickness – FALSE

If you found yourself getting sick a lot, it’s said that you’re having a girl. I was lucky enough to not have any morning sickness throughout my first trimester, even more reason to think I was having a boy. I did feel dizzy and nauseous sometimes, but I was able to either sit down or breathe through it.

3. Pregnancy glow – UNCLEAR

It’s pretty hard to tell if I have the “pregnancy glow” that you hear about in movies. I feel like my face, hair and nails look the same. I didn’t get bad acne or anything from the pregnancy hormones so that was good news. If you have that *glow* it’s believed that you’re having a boy.

4. Moody – FALSE

I think I was pretty calm during my pregnancy (my husband might think differently). I didn’t feel moody or emotional. It’s been said that if you’re moody, you’re likely having a girl.

5. Carrying high vs. low – FALSE

Throughout my entire pregnancy, I carried pretty high. I often felt kicks behind my ribs! Even at the end, right before I went into labor, I felt like my bump was still high. The old wives’ tale is that if you’re carrying low, you are likely having a boy.

6. Chinese gender predictor – FALSE

You can use a Chinese gender predictor (I used this one from What to Expect) to guess the sex based on your birthday and your baby’s due date. The prediction is based off of your lunar age. It’s a really old tradition, but like these other wives’ tales there’s no proof that it actually works. Mine said I’d be having a boy.

7. Heartburn – FALSE

Another old wives’ tale is that if you have heartburn during your pregnancy, you’re probably having a girl — with a full head of hair. My sweet girl was born with a lot of hair, but I didn’t suffer from heartburn very much during my pregnancy.

8. Hair & nails thinning – FALSE

If your hair and nails are thin and brittle, it’s said that you’re likely having a girl. I did not experience this during my pregnancy. I feel like my hair and nails were growing quickly & strong!

I’d love to hear if these gender predictors worked for you! Were they correct?
